Our History

Herbert H. Pearce spent the first part of his career as a successful executive at the A.C. Gilbert Company in New Haven, Connecticut. Having worked his way up the ranks the old fashioned way (hard work, initiative, and tremendous people skills), Herb was a highly valued employee. In 1957, however, after many years of service to the Company, Herb realized that if he were ever to do something on his own, now was the time. Having just turned 40, he decided to announce to A.C. Gilbert that he was leaving the company. “Funny thing is”, Herb says, “I didn’t know what I was going to do. Everyone said I had rocks in my head”. Herb soon partnered with his brother to start a construction company. It was a short year later, in 1958, that he sold out his interest and started his own real estate company.
In the first 2 years, with little but a dream and a prayer to go on, Herb launched an aggressive campaign to make a name for his company. His many “firsts” in advertising included: radio spots, television, billboards, full page newspaper advertisements, helicopter photo ops and more. Never afraid to take risks, Herb invested in a subdivision that featured electric heat, underground wiring and air conditioning. He hired the reigning Miss United States to promote it.
At the same time, with little money of his own to give, he jumped at the opportunity to chair the fundraising campaign for the United Way. That year, they broke all records.
In its first 2 years of business, H. Pearce Company’s sales topped $3 Million.
As Herb grew the business, he focused his attention on Industrial and Commercial Real Estate. He was passionately committed to the growth of the region. Active in the New Haven Chamber of Commerce and an advocate for the development of the I-91 and I-95 corridors, Herb was never afraid to stick out his neck and fight for what he believed in. The company’s many successful commercial projects included a retail plaza at Exit 9 on Universal Drive (fondly referred to as “Herb’s Highway”), now home to BJs, Home Depot, movie theatres, and, most recently, Target. His Whitney-Grove Square project now houses one of New Haven’s premier commercial office buildings along with its most luxurious residential condos. Never afraid to take a risk, Herb had the stamina to see his vision through to completion, no matter what obstacles he faced.
With awards too numerous to mention, Herb Pearce went on to become one of the leaders of the community, an opinion molder who was a sought after speaker and the person to count on. Still active, and well into his 80s, Herb continues to influence those around him.
The company’s traditions of leadership, integrity, and community service, are still at the core of its business operations under its current leader Barbara Pearce, President and CEO. Having joined the company in 1981, Barbara spent her initial years expanding its residential division, developing a strong management team, and enhancing the company’s offerings. Under her leadership, its Relocation Services Division became one of the most well-respected in the region, servicing the expansion needs of area corporations. Mortgage services, insurance services, and other ancillary services were developed to further meet the needs of the company’s growing client list.
Her drive to remain on the cutting edge continues to be evidenced by the company’s marketing innovations, technological advances, and leadership role among the Commercial Real Estate Brokerage community. Over its 4 plus decades, the H. Pearce Company has remained a privately owned, independent company, committed to delivering the most professional possible service without sacrificing the personal service that is critical to building long term business relationships.
